there are things that shouldn’t happen

bitter things that make life hard

clouds that have no silver lining

hurts that leave us scarred

there are things that shouldn’t happen

car wrecks and red blood-stains

rape and murder, suicide

and war and drugs and pain

there are things that shouldn’t happen

guns and fists and blades

famine in a poor man’s land

diseases, cancer, aids

hard luck in business, broken things

and rain in harvest-time

projects that don’t turn out right

and wasted all our time

there are things that shouldn’t happen

all the bad things people do

feuds and hate and prejudice

greed and anger too

child abuse and bullied kids

newspapers full of crime

mothers without love to give

daddies without time

there are things that shouldn’t happen

to make us grieve and cry

life should never be so cruel

and children shouldn’t die

life should never be so cruel, and

     children

                 shouldn’t

                                die.
